Monthly Tips: Winter Travel

by Linda on February 4, 2010

Despite what you initially might think about one bag travel in the winter (excess baggage, bulky items, etc…) Traveling in the winter is my favorite because you get to layer on the sweaters and create multiple combination outfits that when reconfigured, can look like a totally new outfit! The best part about winter clothing is that it’s made out of wool.

Wool is Worthy of One Bag Travel

Wool is thermal, meaning it can store water vapor up to 35 per cent of its own dry weight yet it remains dry to touch and speeds up the body’s own cooling system. Wool also is very breathable, which helps with circulation. And the best part is that wool contains natural lanolin which creates a natural waterproof barrier or repellency, and has antibacterial properties! This means, you can wear that sweater multiple times, and it won’t stink up as quickly as a tshirt made of cotton would. How great is that?

Wool items also dry quickly when hand washed. Now that I have said that, I will add with caution that you cannot expect a big heavy sweater to dry overnight. However, if you have a great pair of smartwool socks, they will probably dry a lot quicker. Smartwool items are the absolute best wool products for travel. Their wool is extra thin, which makes it great for drying, and it is not itchy like one would imagine it to be. They make tshirts made of 100% wool that are absolutely fantastic for packing in your bag as a baselayer for many outfits.

Winter is all about the greys, blacks and purples

I love winter because my whole wardrobe is pretty much coordinated for the season. I have black slacks, grey sweaters, purple scarves, and jackets of similar shades. What this enables me to do is mix and match because everything goes together! Try that with your colorful summer outfits….

Despite what common belief might be, the whole winter one bag travel is actually better…. in my humble opinion at least!
