I just threw out my old travel bag, which was a Le Sport Sac. I liked it because it was compact and rolled up into practically nothing. But after my recent travels to Prague, I almost had my bag slashed and stolen. The Le Sport Sac makes for a nice additional small space bag, but not for a good travel bag.

This week I picked up the PacSafe CitySafe 200. This bag has many fine features that make it a real travel bag of choice.

Features:

Nylon material, easy to wipe and clean.

high tensile stainless steel wire in strap, making it not only virtually slash proof, but also into a handy way to attach your bag to a railing to prevent a thief from grabbing and running with the bag!

eXomesh slashguard. This wire mesh lines the bottom of the bag, so that a knife slash across the bottom is fruitless (thieves like to slash the bottom of your bag so that the contents spill out onto the ground).

4 anti-theft features: slashproof shoulder strap; eXomesh slashguard in lower front and bottom section of bag; tamperproof zippers; snatchproof strap

Secure zippered main compartment, 2 inner zippered pockets, padded phone/camera pocket, credit card holders, pen holder, key clip

I like the pacsafe citysafe bag because it’s just the right size for putting across the body. It’s big enough to store my small macbook pro inside, and small enough to look like a normal purse. It’s very versatile and I have been using it a lot as my purse around town. Action shots to come soon!!

Hello Everyone! I am about to embark on my next big adventure… Skiing in Val Thorens, France (http://www.valthorens.com) Show on map

The challenge: With a layover in Heathrow, I have high doubts that my luggage will make it to Geneva unscathed. Therefore, I am only checking: 2 pairs of Skis, and 2 pairs of Skiboots. The rest? On my back with a MEI bag!

update: We arrived safely and the two bags containing my skis and skiboots have arrived on time. However we just found out that British Airways plans to strike the day we go home!!!

First things first: I put together a list. A very very detailed list. I checked it twice. I crossed off everything I did not need. What this trip boils down to is:

1. I need clothing to ski in
2. I need clothing to lounge around the cabin in
3. I need clothing to go out and party in the village in

Therefore 3 total outfits! Plus undergarments and sleep wear.

I have packed everything I need to ski in with the exception of the skis and boots themselves! This way in case the skis get lost, I can still rent them when I arrive in France.

This strategy I believe works well. The backup plan is to have all of the necessities on me in case of lost baggage (this has been known to happen to me twice when traveling through Heathrow).

And here is the list of items!

In the Bag:

underwear x 7 days (I packed ex-officio travel underwear)

sports bra

smartwool ski socks x 2

non-ski smartwool socks x 2

Long sleeved t-shirt for lounging/sleeping

long black adidas athletic pants for lounging

wicking nike t-shirt

smartwool next-to-skin long sleeved active wear shirt

skiing goggles

skiing gloves

skiing glove liners (smartwool)

ski pants (thick lined)

silk long underwear

thick warm hat

handkerchief

thin black button up wool cardigan

neck pillow

slippers

sun glasses

Play Station Portable

Headphones

Bikini bathing Suit

2 scarves black + purple

Balaclava

Wallet

LeSport Sac medium sized purse

Chargers for the PSP/Phone

Toiletries

SinkStopper + Drying Line

brush

Book (the girl with the dragon tattoo)

Flip Mino HD

On my body:

A very comfortable pair of Gap stretch jeans

Undergarments

Fleece and Wool pullover

Spyder Ski Jacket with zip on hood

Purple wicking ex officio tshirt

Rugged Hiking Sneakers

The trick is: Make sure you wear as much as you can onto the plane that is heavy and big. Like this giant jacket that I have to use for skiing. Minimalist is key! Downsize downsize and downsize until you get to a manageable amount of things you want to actually wear. Rewearing clothing isn’t bad at all!!! On a ski trip, which involves a lot of bulky clothing, most of it is rewearable!! Especially wool

Next week I will be taking a trip to three cities: Denver, San Diego and Chicago. This is a sample of how I would pack my bag, including what I will wear on the plane, pack for working out, pack for business visits, and bundle it all. Bundling is a very important step for one-bag travel. Watch carefully to see how I smooth out each item before bundling. The sleeves are folded in, to keep the clothing tight inside the bundle.

I will be posting breakout videos of other tips on bundling, but this is the first installment of these videos – giving you a nice overview of the process! Enjoy!

When traveling abroad with only one bag to fit an entire wardrobe, toiletries and basics, you need something versatile enough that can carry it all – AND – be able to physically lug the thing around the airport. I own and can speak to two of the top rated bags in the one bag enthusiast camp.

Red Oxx’s Airboss

The One Bag Test: Travel 2 weeks in the winter in Europe

The challenge: In the past, I have had luggage lost in Eastern Europe, and I wasn’t about to let it happen on this trip. This bag, combined with some practice in packing, allowed me to take a 2 week trip to Eastern Europe in the dead of winter. I was on a trip that required me to wear business attire for 5 days, and at the end of the trip I went to an Opera and had to wear a floor length ball gown!! The second week I went skiing in Serbia. I got everything into this bag. Believe me – It is possible!!By bundling my clothes, I was able to get all of the things I needed into this bag. I also bought and stuffed an additional 2 dresses, a bottle of perfume, and some small gifts into the bag on my way back.

Bag Pros: I like the bag’s sturdiness. You can tell it is made of quality material. There is one big pocket on one side of the bag that non-important accessories like food and magazines can be stuffed. On the other side is a zipped large pocket that larger documents (ie: tickets, travel documents) can be stored but not secured. There is one small zip pocket on the exterior that can be used for smaller items. I love the shoulder strap – which is wide and hugs the shoulder. This is one of Red Oxx’s big pluses. Unfortunately on one business trip I was forced to check a bag at the gate. During this process I forgot to remove the shoulder strap – which was then lost in the process. Luckily the airline covered the loss and it was quickly replaced. There are three compartments, which is nice when rotating clothing from dirty to clean. The middle compartment allows for bulkier items like shoes, or a laptop to be stored.

Bag Cons: I do not like 100% of the weight on my shoulder when traveling long distances. I had a long layover in Heathrow airport and was forced to lug around 2 weeks of clothing in my carryon all around the airport terminal. This also can be quite a hassle if you need to physically RUN across an airport with such a heavy bag. For a woman this is a HUGE downside!! If you have back problems, I do not recommend this bag at all.

Overall the Airboss is excellent for business travel. I recommend it for this use, and not so much for the international vacation travel.

The challenge: Fitting all of the gifts for my family into this bag along with my clothes!!! I ended up packing too little in clothing

Bag Pros: This bag is quite literally the bomb. I love the shoulder straps!! They can be tucked away so you can’t even see them, in a hidden pocket on the back. And the shoulder straps are not just straps. They are padded a million times better than a high school backpack. There is a lumbar support strap, as well as a waistline strap for additional support. This bag was a lifesaver when darting through an airport for a late arriving flight. I had but minutes to make it across the airport. Running with the bag by my side in my arms was not helping, but strapping it to my body made the physical feat less painful.

There’s one large pocket on the outside which is nice for a book or documents.

Bag Cons: There is only one pocket inside. It’s small. It’s big enough to fit your keys and passport in. All of your clothes fit in the one large compartment inside. This is fine if you don’t mind if your clothes are mingling with your workout sneakers. That was fine for a trip to Thailand but for business travel I need to wrap the sneakers in a separate bag. Plastic baggies are a must with this bag.

The last con is that this bag is custom made. This means that there is a long wait for the bag to arrive on your doorstep. The first MEI bag that I bought took 3 months to arrive. We weren’t even sure if it would come. The result is a beautiful quality bag with excellent quality materials.

Overall this bag is excellent for vacation travel. Business travel is fine for use, but you may appear like a backpacker with the straps out. You should hear the comments I have gotten from my coworkers when I show up with this pack on my back.
